Things to Do in Planica (in Any Season)
Planica is one of the most famous places among the Slovene population. It is the home of ski flying and the place where the biggest Slovene event of the year happens across 5 days in mid to late March - FIS Ski Jumping Season Finale.
Even though Planica became world-famous for its winter sports event, there is plenty to do there in any season.
In this blog post, I share with you 13 things to do in Planica in any season.

1. Attend World Cup Season Finale
Every March, only the best of the best can participate at the ski jumping season finale.
If you want to attend one of the biggest events in Slovenia, make sure to secure your tickets as soon as possible. This most popular sports event often gets sold out weeks in advance.
The valley under the Ponce mountains was supposed to host FIS Ski Flying Championships in March 2020. The FIS Ski Flying World Championships will now be held from December 10 to December 13, 2020, and the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup Finals from March 25 to March 28, 2021.

If you cannot make it to the season finale, you can also attend winter and summer (!) national championships.

2. Admire Ski Jumpers at Training
Did you know that ski jumping is also a summer sport? You catch Slovenian and international ski jumpers at training on snow or plastic throughout the whole year.

3. Zipline
Have you ever wanted to feel like an eagle and you are not afraid of heights? You can now experience this by riding half a km (!) long zipline. This is allegedly the steepest zipline in the world. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

4. Wind Tunnel
If you want to experience how it is to fly but you are not into extreme sports, then wind tunnel is the perfect alternative pick for you.
Cost: 60 EUR
5. Guided Tour
Explore the state of art nordic centre on a guided tour. You can pick between a guided tour of the Nordic Centre, guided tour of the ski jumping museum or guided tour of the Nordic Centre and ski jumping museum.
Cost: 8 EUR onwards
6. Planica Museum
Not only you can explore over 80 years of Planica’s rich history, but you can also step into ski jumper's shoes via virtual simulators.
You can also try your hand in judging ski jumps and have a virtual conversation with ski jumping legends like Peter Prevec and Walter Hofer.
Cost: 6 EUR onwards
7. Indoors Cross-Country Skiing
Enjoy indoors cross-country skiing track in an underground snow tunnel from May until the end of autumn.
You can also participate in cross country ski school and learn different running techniques.
Cost: 9 EUR onwards
8. Top of the Ski Flying Hill
Take a seven-minute chairlift ride to the top of the ski flying hill to admire the views. You can also walk to the top alongside the hill for free.
Cost: 3 EUR onwards
9. Cafe
Enjoy a drink at the cafe with a view on the ski jumping hills.
10. Viewing Platform
Not many people know that you can visit the viewing platform on top of the central building for free!
Take the lift or stairs to the top of the building and enjoy the beautiful view of the nordic centre.
Cost: Free
11. Souvenirs
Buy Planica or Slovenia themed souvenir to remember your visit.
You can get one of these handy postcards that will teach you some basic Slovene phrases.
12. Disc Golf Park
Disc golf is a game that is very similar to traditional golf, except that instead of hitting the ball with the stick in the hole, you throw a frisbee (flying disc) into a specially designed metal basket.
The goal is to finish the course with as few throws as possible.

13. Planica Ice Cream
Treat yourself to one of the most iconic Slovene ice creams named after Planica - Planica.
The ice cream now comes in various flavours, the common ground being three different flavours combined together in one package and covered with Slovene chocolate Gorenjka.
I recommend you try the original flavour combination of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.
Fun fact, Planica ice cream is now also exported to China, so you might be able to buy it there as well!
