Mayfield Lavender Farm is probably the closest lavender field to The City, located in transport Zone 6 south of London. The Farm is easily accessible by car and somewhat reasonably accessible by public transport thus perfect for a day trip out of London.
How To Get To Mayfield Lavender Farm Using Public Transport
There are multiple ways you can reach Lavender Farm. I have taken the following path:
Take a train from London Victoria (Southern Rail) or London Blackfriars (Thameslink which also stops at London Bridge) to Purley Station. Train ride takes around 30 minutes.
Cross the road and take 166 bus that departs from in front of large Tesco store to Oak Park stop. Bus stops directly in front of the entrance to the farm. Bus ride takes around 20 to 25 minutes.
It will take you around one hour to an hour and a half (depending on how long you will have to wait on the bus) to get to Mayfield Lavender Fields from the city.
You can use Oyster card or your contactless card on train and bus.
TIP: Check Google Maps, City Mapper, Thameslink and Southern Rail websites to plan the best route for you.
What Month Does Lavender Bloom In The UK And Best Time To Visit
The blooming of lavender depends on the weather but in general, lavender can be in bloom from late June and all the way to September with July and August being peak months to visit. Beware, peak months also bring peak crowds.
If you can visit early in the morning (The Farm opens at 9 AM) to avoid the crowds. I have arrived there just after 10 AM (it was a cloudy Sunday) and it was reasonably busy. There was no queue at the café and there was plenty of empty tables to sit at. When I was leaving at around 1 PM there was a significant queue at the café and the field was quite busy. I have visited lavender fields in pre last weekend of June.
You can also follow Mayfield Lavender Farm’s website and social media accounts where they regularly update flowering information.
I have decided for a visit after I have seen their Instagram post and a few other people posting pictures from their visit under location tag on Instagram.
On the left you can see lavender in early blooming stages whilst the lavender field on the right has not yet bloomed.

VISITING: Come early to avoid the crowds.

WHAT TO WEAR: I wore white and light blue romper and a white t-shirt. White, yellow and light blue outfits make great contrast for the photos. Avoid wearing green or purple.
